CLARE,YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE: May you rest in peace, and know that your death was not in vain. The AGE Newspaper article: Cameron Houston November 5, 2007 AS LEADING trainers finalise preparations for Australia's greatest horse race, Melbourne's women are frantically making plans for the big day, and a perfect golden tan is essential. Many spray-tan businesses are busier than panel beaters, and "tan parties" are yet another bizarre spin-off of the race that stops the nation but keeps the cash registers singing. Melissa Lang reckons the spring carnival is like Christmas for the burgeoning industry and says her business, Flawless Mobile Spray Tanning, has been inundated over the past fortnight. Ms Lang says tan parties are a fun way of preparing for the races and great for a "girly catch-up". "I usually do it in another room, while the other girls enjoy a glass of champagne and nibblies," she says. Ms Lang covers her client's body with a harmless tanning solution derived from sugar cane and often "double coats" visible areas such as arms, legs and chest. "They can wear bikini, g-strings or their birthday suit, whatever they feel comfortable with," she says. "I always ask them what they are planning to wear and then go over the areas that will be on show." Suzie Righi, who runs a spray-tan business from her Armadale home, reckons a golden complexion is a girl's best friend during the carnival. "It has a real domino effect on a woman's psyche and makes you feel healthier, your eyes look brighter and teeth look whiter," Ms Righi says. She warns that the difference between looking like a Greek goddess and an Oompa Loompa depends on the tanning products and their application. Ms Righi says there has been a sharp increase in the number of 20-year-old women requesting spray-on tans following the death of 26-year-old Clare Oliver, who died last month from melanoma. In a public appeal, Ms Oliver blamed solariums and sun-baking for her cancer. Over the spring carnival, Ms Righi will tan more than 300 women. She charges about $45 for a 15-minute session. The golden hue lasts for between five and 10 days and eventually washes off in the shower. She says her female clients are increasingly bringing their husbands and boyfriends to be artificially bronzed.

I am so sorry to hear that your life ended so soon- too soon. I have been following your story for a little while and i too am very pale. This summer i will no longer get that 'perfect tan' as it is so not worth the price. i just wish everybody would take something from your trajic story and put it to use in their own lives. R.I.P hun xx

Hi Honey, it so sad to heard that passed away, r.i.p. For my whole life I have been pale and not been able to get a tan. I have had several burns in my life. Many people have suprise by my palness and tell me to get a tan (some have question about ethnicities because my paleness), but because that I am not a relly rich person so i never go to tanning salon. I wish there is more people realizing not getting a tan is not the end of the world...

I have just arrived home after 2 1/2 years living in London and travelling through Europe. I was reading this months issue of Cosmo magazine and was so shocked to see the article about Clare. I met Clare randomly in a hostel in Madrid, Spain she had just finished her Contiki tour and I was sharing my dorm room with a friend that she had made through the tour Rita from Los Angeles America. I was only in Madrid for 2 nights but Clare and I had some big deep and meaningful conversations about life and love in the hostel. I just can't beleive that she has passed away. She told me about her cancer and the fact that her Mum had given her the money and opportunity to go to travel Europe as a kind of reward and just in case measure because of the cancer. Clare had such a strong personality but when I was talking to her was somewhat worried and confused at the same time about her life and what she wanted from it. Based on the article it sounded like she finally finished what she started with all her study and got the job that she really wanted. It is just such a pitty that things had to go the way that they did. I may not have known Clare all that well but I know that she had an amazing heart and loved life. May her memory live on in all the people whos life she touched. Jennah Christensen Emerald, Queensland

May you rest in peace Clare. Your story truly touched me and made me realise how reckless I have been in damaging my skin over the years. Because of you I have made a change for the better. I will remember your story always.
